Work Samples - Short Film

The short film medium is often looked upon as a mini-feature. Although it can fill that role it shouldn't be assumed to be limited only to such a task. Breaking the narrative expectation of the feature length project a short film can explore concepts and ideas that do not lend themselves to the longer presentation format. It's comparable to the differences between the novel and the short story. Each form has certain aspects that can express ideas that do not fit in any other.

My approach to short films is in the exploratory context. I conceive of them as slices of story, essence of the concepts, hints and reflections. By taking this approach the storyteller is freed from the confines of structure and can fully dedicate all the focus on the central ideas of most impact. These are the short films that have the more resonance with me.

The Writer.

I conceived of the short film, "The Writer." as an experiment of conception. On one hand I was curious as to whether I could bring together enough elements on a limited budget to make a compelling piece of entertainment. On the other I have been fascinated by the French concept of the auteur theory of film- that one person's vision could truly be a sole driving force behind the creative aspects of a film project. With this start I determined to create a work completely without collaboration and apart from the actors (without whom I could not have made anything nearly as compelling) I intended to do every task on my own.

The development and process of the making of this film can be followed in the current project section of this web site. To say the least it was an eye opening experience. The project achieved the aims I set for it and has been warmly received by the relatively few audiences that have had a chance to see it. One of the drawbacks of making a short film is that there are still few viable venues in which to share the end results.
